Vietnam reach the ASIAD 2026 quarter-finals: the 35th-minute gap and the shot-quality question

In the fifth minute, a diagonal ball from the left travelled into Vietnam's penalty area. Nothing in that sequence was explosive, just one touch from Mohammadali Urinboev and Cao Van Binh had to pick the ball out of his net. I paused on that frame for a while, not because the finish was beautiful, but because Vietnam's back line had not settled into position: the gap between the two centre-backs was wider than usual, and nobody covered in time. Across the J.League match files I keep, the opening ten minutes are always the least stable zone of any defensive system, because the rules of movement are not yet synchronised and the midfield has not established its hierarchy. This is the fifth time this year I have watched a team pay for exactly that zone.

The break at minute 35

Uzbekistan scored early and immediately got what they wanted: a game state in which the opponent has to push up. Vietnam then pressed forward genuinely, the ball was circulated to both flanks, and a few chances appeared. Nguyen Thai Quoc Cuong's shot was blocked. Nguyen Ngoc My's shot went off target. Nguyen Thanh Nhan put the ball in the net once, but the referee ruled offside. Three situations, three different outcomes, one shared feature: none of them was a comfortable strike.

The most significant moment was not the fifth minute. It was the 35th, when central midfielder Nguyen Xuan Bac left the pitch injured with the score still unchanged. In Vietnam's system at this tournament, Xuan Bac is the rhythm link: the man who receives from the centre-backs, turns, and decides which line gets activated. The job consists of sideways passes and unglamorous receptions, so it draws little attention. When it disappears, the team loses its ability to switch states. Coach Dinh Hong Vinh confirmed exactly that afterwards: Vietnam's capacity to hold rhythm and transition dropped sharply, the pressure could not be sustained, and the team gradually stalled.

There is a detail the scoreboard does not record. The player walked to the touchline with his hand still on his thigh, head down. Halfway there, he tried to turn back as if to say something to the bench, then stopped and kept walking.

The second goal came in the 68th minute, from precisely the zone I feared once Xuan Bac had gone: the penalty area, after a one-on-one duel. Ibraimov twisted past Pham Ly Duc and struck hard, beating Cao Van Binh. I am not in the habit of blaming a defender for losing a duel. The more telling point is that nobody covered. Once the midfield lost its rhythm-keeper, Vietnam's block stretched vertically and the distance between midfield and defence grew. A one-on-one inside the box is only that dangerous when the line above it can no longer drop.

Three matches, 51 shots

Across three group games, Vietnam took 51 shots, put 17 on target and scored three goals. That is 33.3 per cent accuracy, and a conversion rate under 6 per cent of all attempts. These are verifiable numbers, and they deserve a more careful reading than they usually get.

I do not use expected-goals metrics to explain this match. Public models compress every shot into a single average, while what actually decides an outcome is the position of the standing foot, the number of defenders in front, and the physical state of the shooter. A blocked shot means the attempt was struck into a body. A shot off target means the angle had already narrowed before the foot made contact. Those two facts tell a very different story from the story of poor finishing.

Coach Dinh Hong Vinh said his team attacked ineffectively and did not exploit the final third well. The term deserves explaining: the final third is the area within roughly thirty-five metres of the opponent's goal. It is where a team must win numerical and positional superiority. Shooting often and still failing in that zone usually means the ball reached the shooter's feet when the defenders were already in place.

The blind spot in the diagnosis

Vietnam's problem at this tournament does not lie in their ability to take chances; it lies in the location and quality of the shots. A team that takes 51 shots and puts only 17 on target usually fails not because of nerves in front of goal, but because its attacking structure does not produce shots from high-value areas.

If the diagnosis leans towards chance conversion, the treatment is finishing drills and psychological sessions. If the diagnosis leans towards location, the treatment is structure: cut-backs from the flanks, third-man runs, and stretching the opposing back line before the ball reaches the shooter. Two diagnoses lead to two different training programmes, and only one of them can be fixed within forty-eight hours.

There is a further blind spot, in the approach to the opening phase. Vietnam deliberately played cautiously against a strong opponent, ceding territory early to keep the score level and reassess later. Uzbekistan favour exactly that game state: a physically dominant side enjoys an opponent sitting deep, because it lets them dictate the tempo of contact. The fifth-minute goal turned a reasonable gamble into a bad one, because Vietnam were forced to open up at the very moment their system had not yet found its rhythm.

The quarter-final opponent will be decided after South Korea meet Saudi Arabia on the final matchday of Group D. South Korea need only a draw to be certain of topping the group, and would then face Vietnam. Their motivation carries a structural layer few people mention: under South Korean law, an Asian Games gold medal exempts a player from mandatory military service. That is an incentive architecture unlike anything else in the tournament, and it changes how a player assesses risk in every duel. South Korea brought three high-quality over-age players and are regarded as candidates for the gold medal.

What to verify

The quarter-final takes place on 25 September at Paloma Mizuho. The opening ten minutes will reveal whether Vietnam again enter cautiously or push their block higher to avoid a repeat of that unstable zone. Nguyen Xuan Bac's availability, if he does not recover in time, is the test of the midfield's ability to switch states. And the shots will show where they come from. If they keep arriving from outside the box and keep being blocked, the diagnosis about chance conversion was wrong. If they arrive from cut-backs and close-range strikes inside the area, the team found its answer in three days.

Every team is a sentence ninety minutes long. Vietnam's sentence in Nagoya has only reached its midpoint.
